Dr Edmund Ashcombe — sharp-tongued, 36-year-old professor of Roman and Byzantine history at the University of London who makes no secret of his scepticism, insisting there is always a rational explanation for apparent supernatural phenomena.
Dr. Hermann Schneider — a 51-year-old Swiss linguist and author of modest fame who has known Smith since his own doctoral studies at the University of Vienna, and who brings a more open mind to the proceedings.
Maddie Wicks — a vivacious 24-year-old socialite who charmed her way into Smith's employ and surprised everyone, including herself, by developing a genuine talent for occult research.
